Skincare 101: Double Cleansing – Everything you need to know
Double cleansing is basically a two-step skincare process that involves using two different types of cleansers to remove impurities from the skin.

I am certain you all must be familiar with the hype around double cleansing these days. I for one am a big fan of it. When it comes to removing makeup, more often than not we tend to reach for the convenience of makeup wipes, but they are harsh on the skin and undoubtedly cannot match the thoroughness, gentleness and long-term benefits of double cleansing.
Double cleansing is basically a two-step skincare process that involves using two different types of cleansers to remove impurities from the skin. The first cleanse typically involves an oil-based cleanser, which helps dissolve makeup, impurities and excess oils, followed by a second/final cleanse with a water-based cleanser to remove any remaining dirt, sweat or impurities. This method promises a deeper, more effective cleanse, leaving your skin feeling fresh and clean.
Most popular methods of double cleansing
There are typically 3 most popular ways of double cleansing wherein you can pick one based on your skin type and the intensity of products you are about to take off your face.
1. Cleansing Oil
If you deal with black heads, white heads and have congestion prone skin, you can opt for cleaning oil for your first cleanse followed by any gentle facewash suitable for your skin type. Also make sure that you wash the cleaning oil off properly as it can itself lead to breakouts if not cleaned well.
2. Cleansing Balm
This one is my personal favourite. Now a cleansing balm suits all skin types. You need not worry about any acne, congestion or sensitivity with this one. Melts heavy-duty, waterproof makeup or sunscreen like butter and cleanses the skin beautifully. Use any mild facewash of your choice for the final cleanse.
3. Micellar Water
This is ideal for someone with sensitive skin and only if you wear very light makeup. Follow it up with a good water-based cleanser to finish off. Would not do the job properly with heavy-duty makeup so don’t try to rub your skin off with pads soaked with micellar water if you have heavy makeup on.
In the world of skincare, double cleansing has gained a loyal following, and for good reason. While double cleansing is particularly beneficial for those who wear makeup and layer up sunscreen daily, is it for everyone and should you be doing it every single day? Well, that depends. If you are someone who does not apply makeup or does not require reapplying sunscreen and especially if you have extremely dry skin, you can choose to skip double cleansing. For the rest of us, on days we stay indoors and apply nothing more than our basic toners and moisturisers, any regular cleanser would do the job pretty well. Nevertheless, it’s a great option for anyone with any skin type looking to achieve a deeper clean.
To sum up, double cleansing is a simple yet powerful technique that can elevate your basic skincare routine. Whether you are someone looking to ensure all traces of makeup are gone or just want a more thorough cleanse, this process is worth considering for a healthier, clearer complexion.
